Business Sunshine Energy
The Public Service Commission (PSC) voted to terminate the Business Sunshine Energy program, effective July 29, 2008.
Sunshine Energy has been one of the best performing renewable energy programs in the nation. We’re grateful to our FPL business customers who voluntarily contributed to the program and made it successful.
Our Business Sunshine Energy customers demonstrated their commitment to reducing their carbon footprint and can be extremely proud of what their contributions have accomplished. Sunshine Energy allowed customers to reduce their carbon footprint in a cost-effective manner through investing in renewable energy credits. Each block of 100% Green-e® certified renewable energy purchased played an important role in supporting renewable sources of energy across the country.
FPL did not object to the termination of the Sunshine Energy program because we in Florida have reached the next phase in promotion of renewable energy in our state. The legislature approved and the governor signed into law an act that appropriately promotes the construction of renewable energy to address global climate change. As a result, we have announced our intention to build three new solar projects which will make Florida No. 2 in the nation in electricity generated by solar energy.
Sunshine Energy was a successful program that prevented the release of 500,000 tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, which is the equivalent of removing 83,000 cars from the road according the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Our customers played a vital role in this achievement, and they can be assured that FPL remains committed to providing affordable, clean energy solutions that contribute to a better quality of life for all Floridians.
