Business Refrigeration Program:
Helping Your Business Become More Energy Efficient

Why it makes sense | How your business can benefit | Start saving today

  Business Sense:
Making the Most of FPL’s Refrigeration Incentive

To qualify, you need to install one or more of these technologies:

Electric strip heaters around display case doors using automatic controls with humidistats to turn off heaters when not needed, or controls that stagger defrost cycles.
Special glass doors for reach-in display cases that require minimum or no anti-sweat heat.
Freezer doors that incorporate hot gas reclaim, reducing or eliminating the need for electric strip heaters normally used for defrost control.

Documentation must be provided by the manufacturer indicating the potential kW reduction of equipment installed. The incentive amount is based on this reduction.

These programs are subject to modification or cancellation at any time without notice. Final eligibility requirements are specified in the program standards.

If you’re in the supermarket, convenience store, restaurant or distribution center business, refrigeration is essential but can also be expensive. Preventing ice from building up on door gaskets and keeping the fog or “sweat” off glass doors is a significant, but necessary part of your energy consumption.

There’s an affordable way to more efficiently operate the strip heaters that control the condensation that forms on refrigerator and freezer display case doors. And, FPL will help you pay to install the technology.

FPL’s program pays an incentive for the installation of three energy-efficient technologies that can help minimize condensation:

  • Anti-sweat heater controls
  • Hot gas reclaim
  • Special glass doors

In addition, these strategies:

  • Reduce or eliminate the need for energy-intensive heaters.
  • Help prevent equipment damage.
  • Ensure customers can see the products inside.

Why it makes sense

Most anti-sweat refrigeration heaters operate non-stop regardless of humidity levels, however 24/7 operation is rarely required. Anti-sweat heaters only need to run when condensation is likely. As a result, drier days present an opportunity to control anti-sweat heater use and reduce energy usage. The following three technologies make sense:

1. Anti-sweat heater controls – Controls cycle the heating of doors and frames off and on and are pre-programmed to only turn on when they detect:

  • A trigger dew point – the temperature at which condensation or dew forms – in a specific area of the display case.
  • Actual moisture in the air.

2. Special display case doors – Through the use of insulating technologies and glass coating, special doors use low or no electric heat to prevent condensation.

3. Hot gas reclaim – Freezer doors can incorporate hot gas reclaim from nearby refrigeration equipment to eliminate the need for electric strip heaters normally used for defrost control.

How your business can benefit

  • Reduced operating costs – Controls, hot gas reclaim and special glass features can save 50% or more of the energy used by anti-sweat heaters.
  • More energy-efficient refrigeration – Your store’s refrigeration system is working to keep products cool. Eliminating extra heat generated by electric strip heaters allows for more efficient operation and prolongs the need for investment in new equipment.
  • FPL incentive – FPL offers an incentive of up to $75 per kilowatt (kW) reduction for the installation of qualifying controls and equipment that reduce electric strip heater usage in refrigeration equipment. Click here for an incentive table.

Everybody wins

With anti-sweat heater controls and equipment, building owners save energy and money and all of us benefit from reduced energy demand.
