Teach for America

Teach for America

Teach for America works in partnership with communities to expand education opportunity for children facing the challenges of poverty. Founded in 1990, Teach for America recruits and develops a diverse corps of outstanding individuals of all academic disciplines to commit two years to teach in high-need schools and become lifelong leaders in the movement to end education inequity.

FPL has supported the work of Teach for America Miami since 2005, and in 2010 provided a grant to bring additional teachers to the community of Homestead.

City Year Miami

City Year Miami

City Year is an education focused, nonprofit organization that unites young people of all backgrounds for a year of full-time service to keep students in school and on track to graduation.

City Year Miami was launched in the fall of 2008 as a way to support the Miami-Dade Public School System in its efforts to help youth succeed in school and realize their potential.

FPL has supported City Year Miami since 2010 with participation in the Red Jacket Ball, MLK Day and the Women's Bridge Builder Luncheon.

Consortium of Florida Education Foundations

Consortium of Florida Education Foundations

CFEF is the professional association for the local education foundations that serve 2.6 Million students and 295,000 educators throughout Florida’s 67 county-wide school districts. CFEF serves as the conduit for business and philanthropic investment in Florida’s classrooms by creating statewide and regional partnerships that have a direct impact on student achievement at the local level.

FPL works with the Consortium to connect with and support the 28 schools districts in our service area.

Junior Achievement

Junior Achievement of South Florida

Junior Achievement of South Florida inspires and prepares young people to succeed in a global economy. Using practical teaching methods, students learn about business, entrepreneurship and personal finance. FPL has donated $250,000 to the construction of the Junior Achievement World Huizenga Center.

The Junior Achievement World Huizenga Center consists of two main components – JA BizTown (5th grade) and JA Finance Park (8th grade). FPL will be represented in JA BizTown as the city’s utility company. Fifth graders will have the opportunity to live a day in the life of a “grown up.” FPL is proud to be a part of this truly life-changing, educational initiative that will serve 50,000 students in Broward and South Palm Beach County.

Mentoring Program

Mentoring Program

In 2010, FPL piloted a motivational mentoring program to connect FPL and NextEra employees with local middle schools in our area. Employees share real life experiences and stories to inspire and motivate students to value their education and dare to dream big. Watch FPL mentors in action at H.L. Watkins Middle School.
