Stages of Construction

Learn more about our construction process by selecting one of the stages below:

Initiation and Planning

When you first begin planning your project, you should contact FPL as early as possible – even before the final county plat is approved. Once FPL receives your request, we will schedule a Project Manager for your project, and he or she will contact you to complete this stage of construction.

You should:

  1. Notify FPL of New Construction Project.
  2. Request a service availability letter, if necessary, for your lending institution. Be sure to select "Request Service Availability Letter" in the subject drop down menu.
  3. Complete the Checklist for Residential Projects or the Checklist for Commercial and Industrial Projects.
  4. Determine the estimated design and construction schedule based on the size, scope, and installation responsibilities of your project. Be sure to identify any FPL equipment that needs to be relocated or removed.
  5. Determine the type of temporary electric service, or submit your request now.
  6. Review environmental permit requirements.

Once you provide this information to your Project Manager, FPL will begin the design phase of the construction process. You can also e-mail project plans and other information to your FPL Project Manager.

Design

FPL will work with you during the design of your project. A site visit may be required to discuss equipment details and metering requirements for more complex installations. You should:

  • Provide FPL with your updated and preferred contact information.
  • Review preliminary design drawings and provide feedback or approval to FPL. During this stage of construction, you may also need to complete an easement form.
  • Submit a request for a fault current letter, if required, to properly identify your protective equipment for your project. Be sure to select "Request Fault Current Letter" in the subject drop down menu.
  • Review specific fee information (e.g. tariff charges and deposits) and remit any required payments so that construction can begin.
  • Ask your Project Manager for applicable forms and specifications that may be required in the next stage of construction.
  • Inform FPL of any design, schedule or construction site changes. Keep in mind that these changes may result in additional costs and/or delays in the construction schedule.

Approval and Scheduling

During this stage, you should provide FPL with contracts, agreements and other project requirements, including:

  • Underground Facilities Installation Agreement: Obtain this form from your FPL Project Representative
  • Site Ready For Construction
  • Street Light Agreement: Obtain this form from your FPL Project Representative
  • Site Ready for Electric Service Line Installation
  • Signed FPL Vault Specifications document: Obtain this form from your FPL Project Representative
  • Signed FPL Padmount Transformer Specifications document: Obtain this form from your FPL Project Representative
  • Other Requirements – ask your FPL Project Representative for a complete list of requirements for this stage of construction

Be sure to review your responsibilities for Installing personal equipment during this stage of construction.

Once all of these requirements have been met, FPL will order the appropriate materials and equipment and schedule the local construction team for your project. Be sure to keep FPL informed of any design, schedule or construction site changes. Keep in mind that these changes may result in additional costs and/or delays in the construction schedule.

During our construction process, FPL minimizes the disturbance of established lawns and pavement wherever possible. While we try our best not to disturb any existing paving, vegetation or lawns, it is not always possible. Once construction is complete, FPL will review your property for any damage that occurred during construction and restore the affected areas to an agreed upon condition. The time required for restoration of your property will depend on weather conditions and the extent of the disturbed area.

Please submit your feedback to help us improve our construction process. Be sure to select “Builder/Contractor General Question” from the drop down subject menu.
