Smart meter installation is simple. To start with, the upgrade is included as part of your service, and as long as we can access the meter, you don't need to be present for the installation.
Here's what you can expect when smart meters come to your neighborhood:
An FPL-approved contactor from Honeywell or an FPL technician will visit your site and perform the meter upgrade. Installers will carry identification but will not need to enter your home or business.
You can expect a momentary interruption to your electric service when the meter is replaced. This is a normal part of any meter change.
If we can't access your meter, we will contact you and schedule a time for the meter change that is convenient for you.
It may be several months after your smart meter is installed until you receive the full benefits, because there are other network components that must be put into place. Once all of these elements are installed, FPL will perform extensive tests to verify the system's performance and security. After this, FPL will notify you that your meter has been activated, and you will then be able to access your detailed electricity information online or call us.
Once FPL has alerted you that your smart meter is activated, here's how you can access the information it provides:
If you don't have an online account with FPL, you will need three things to sign up for online access: your FPL account number (found on your printed bill); the last four digits of the social security number associated with the account; and an e-mail address.
Once you've logged in and have access to your account, simply click on the "Billing & Usage History" to see your electricity use by the hour, day or month. View our step-by-step guide
Now you'll know how much energy you are using, at what times of day and at what price per unit. You can use this information along with our energy-saving tips to actively manage your energy use and save on your electric bill, if you choose.
If you don't have internet access, you can call the number on your bill and use our automated phone system to access some of the information from your Energy Dashboard.
That's all there is to it!
Greater convenience even if you do nothing
Even if you never take advantage of the ability to better manage your energy use the smart meter and a smarter grid will provide other important benefits:
FPL will be able to prevent many outages and restore power faster if they do occur.
FPL will no longer need to access your property every month to read the meter because it will communicate securely and automatically with us. We will still need access for occasional maintenance.
If you call us with a question, we will have better information to assist you.
When you move, we won't need to estimate your FPL bill and correct it later; we'll have the accurate information already.
