FPL plans to strengthen the electrical system with a new 230 kilovolt transmission line that will move power from an existing substation located near Indiantown in Martin County , to an existing substation located at FPL’s power plant in Riviera Beach in Palm Beach County .

Why is the project needed?

The power line is needed to meet an increasing demand for electricity from existing and new customers as well as strengthen the overall electric transmission system in Palm Beach and Martin counties. In the areas of southern Martin County and northern Palm Beach County the number of customers has increased by about three percent per year during the past three years. This trend is expected to continue. In order to provide residents and business owners with the level of electric service and reliability they deserve now and into the future construction of new power lines is necessary.

Where will the new power line be located?

The proposed power line will be located within an existing right-of-way for about 40 miles going from an existing substation located adjacent to Citrus Boulevard, near Indiantown in western Martin County, to an existing substation located at FPL’s power plant in Riviera Beach in eastern Palm Beach County.

When will the project be constructed?

Construction of the power line is expected to start in the fall of 2005. The line must be completed by June 2007 in order to maintain service reliability.

What will the new power lines look like?

The line will be constructed within an existing power line right-of-way. FPL will add a new power line by rebuilding some of the existing structures within the right-of-way. In general, the number of poles will be the same or decrease as we consolidate lines on poles throughout the project. View a photo showing a typical design of these types of lines -- a single, concrete pole.

Keeping you informed and minimizing inconvenience

FPL will share information about the project with local residential and business customers throughout the project. FPL is meeting with residents, businesses, elected officials, and government agencies to share information and address any community or agency concerns. In addition, a letter was recently mailed to property owners adjacent to the route. We will make every effort to minimize any inconvenience to the community and individual property owners and to work safely and respectfully throughout the construction process.
