Community and environmental stewardship
Nestled among the cornfields of Iowa and the banks of the Cedar River is Iowa’s only nuclear power plant, the DAEC. The plant is situated on 500 acres of land approximately nine miles from the city of Cedar Rapids. The plant utilizes only a small portion of this land for power production, and leases the remaining portion of the land to area farmers to raise crops and allow for animal grazing. For more than 30 years, the DAEC has been generating safe, clean energy and continues to be an important part of a diverse energy mix.
The DAEC is also a thriving workplace and generous neighbor to its local community. The plant employs more than 500 Iowans and has an annual payroll of $46 million. Additionally, replacement property taxes attributed to DAEC operations were approximately $2.95 million in 2004, based on electric generation.
Involvement at both the corporate and employee levels of the organization support numerous economic, social and environmental programs to improve the quality of life of all Iowans. Some of these programs include the United Way of East Central Iowa, Boy and Girl Scouts, Quota Club International, the Eastern Iowa Science and Engineering Fair, the McLeod Busse IMAX Science Station and more.
