FPL is planning to increase the generating capacity of its four existing nuclear units at Turkey Point and St. Lucie by an additional 100 megawatts each. Known in the industry as a "power uprate," this effort entails modifying or replacing existing plant components such as the turbine generators, valves and certain control systems to increase electric generation capacity.
FPL had a Determination of Need petition approved by the Florida Public Service Commission in early 2008 and now has also received approved site certification from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection. FPL now plans to submit license amendment requests by the end of 2009 with Nuclear Regulatory Commission review and approval expected by 2009.
Power uprates are an efficient and affordable way to increase our nuclear generation capacity and increase clean electric generation that does not emit greenhouse gas emissions while also reducing our reliance on any single source of fuel. This then reduces the impact of fuel price volatility and increases the energy security of our customers.
