Protecting Our Environment
Clean air and water | Land conservation | Wildlife protection
FPL Group is an environmental leader within the electric industry. We consider making the right choices to maintain and preserve the environment an important part of our operations. Some of our accomplishments include:
- In 2004, FPL Group scored the highest ranking in the U.S. and second globally in a World Wildlife Fund report. The report said that FPL Group scored high due to leadership in developing wind energy and a committment to dramatically improving power plant efficiency.
- FPL Group was named the 2003 winner of the Edison Award, the electric power industry's highest honor, in recognition of its success in executing a strategy to become a clean energy provider harnessing primarily clean and renewable fuels while also boosting shareholder value.
- In its last two assessments of the electric utility industry, Innovest, the global leader in environmental and social investment research, rated FPL Group as the top environmental electric utility in the U.S.
- FPL's overall emissions are among the nation's lowest, based on the amount of electricity we produce.
- More than half of our generation is derived from clean energy sources, including electricity from our nuclear power plants.
Clean air and water
Nuclear power plants are a clean energy source because the plants don't burn fossil fuel to produce electricity. Nuclear power plant operation produces virtually no pollutants or greenhouse gases that may cause global warming.
FPL's St. Lucie, Turkey Point, Seabrook and Duane Arnold nuclear power plants' environmental programs include these safeguards:
- Numerous environmental monitoring stations sample air and water to ensure strict adherence to government standards.
- State agencies also monitor the environment surrounding the plants.
- Water released from our nuclear power plants is clean and meets regulatory standards for temperature designed to protect aquatic life.
Land conservation
We are committed to preserving natural resources at our nuclear power plant sites. For instance:
- Turkey Point uses only one-tenth of its property for power production purposes; St. Lucie, a smaller site, uses about one-fourth; Seabrook and Duane Arnold about one-third.
- The remaining property is left in its natural habitat and serves as a wildlife preserve, providing homes to endangered or threatened species.
- FPL monitors vegetation and wildlife at the sites and participates in research used by state and federal agencies.
Turkey Point was recognized with the
top industry award for land management and environmental stewardship.
Wildlife protection
We believe in our responsibility to operate in harmony with the environment and protect wildlife at our nuclear power plant sites.
More than 100 species of birds and animals live at the plant sites. Of special note:
- the American crocodile at Turkey Point
- various species of sea turtles at St. Lucie; and
- ospreys and harbor seals at Seabrook Station.
FPL conducts research on sea turtle at
St. Lucie and crocodiles at
Turkey Point and offers wildlife
conservation programs to increase public awareness. In addition,
Seabrook Station supports
the New Hampshire Estuary Project, an organization working to improve
the water quality in the Hampton/Seabrook Estuary.
