Federal and State Application Update
On June 30, FPL filed a Combined License Application with the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, a Site Certification Application with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, and a permit application with the Army Corps of Engineers. These applications are part of a stepwise approach to create the option to build additional nuclear generation for the benefit of our customers. Additional nuclear generation would reduce greenhouse gas emissions, save customers billions in fuel costs and help protect customers from supply disruptions and unpredictable prices that can result from being too reliant on any single source of fuel.
FPL seeks a constructive and collaborative dialogue with our neighbors to provide information and gain input about our new nuclear project. Our goal is to ensure that interests and specific information particular to communities are taken into account and that we work respectfully with communities. For the past year, FPL has been meeting with the community to gather feedback about the project. We have also set up a project e-mail address, cleansafenuclear@FPL.com, to continue receiving feedback from the community and answer any questions or concerns that might arise.
You can view the letter and map FPL sent in July 2009 informing residents of the application filing. Now that this application has been filed, FPL will engage in an extensive multi-agency review process on the local, state and federal level. There are multiple opportunities for individuals and groups to learn more and participate in the process.
The Web sites for the Florida Department of Environmental Protection and the Division of Administrative Hearings will also have information available, such as current dates for public meetings, upcoming deadlines and copies of the application.
