Uranium Fuel
FPL Group nuclear power plants use uranium fuel to provide energy to generate electricity.
The uranium fuel is
- processed into ceramic pellets
- inserted into long, metal rods that are bundled together into fuel assemblies and
- placed within a solid-steel, eight-inch-thick vessel called a reactor
Approximately every 18 months, about one-third of the uranium is replaced, and the used fuel stored in concrete pools of water. Now, after more than 30 years of operation, more storage space is needed. Dry storage is planned at the FPL Group nuclear power plant sites.
