Mentoring and Junior
Achievement
Since the mid 1980's an average of 20 FPL employees per year have
served in the Indiantown Mentoring and Junior Achievement Program.
At the heart of the program's success is the personal connection
that the mentor makes with the student. The genuine concern of mentors
has an immeasurable impact on the success and healthy development
of the students.
The FPL Martin Plant mentors are involved in a variety of school
based activities. Depending on the interest and scheduling, some
prefer one-on-one mentoring; some prefer Junior Achievement, where
they actually teach the class; and some prefer working in the Garden
Program initiated by FPL employees.
FPL Martin Plant has taken an active role to encourage other FPL
facilities as well as other outside corporations and civic organizations
to take part in the mentoring initiative. Through its leadership,
FPL has set the pace in Indiantown for education partnerships.
Community Outreach
FPL Martin Plant maintains a leadership role and other involvement
with key community organizations such as Chamber of Commerce, Big
Brothers/Big Sisters, Boys and Girls Club, Education Coalition,
Non Profit Housing, One Stop Career Center Advisory Board, Parenting
Counts, etc.
FPL Martin Plant has been instrumental in forming the Indiantown
Education Coalition, a non-profit organization dedicated to
promoting educational opportunities in the Indiantown community.
The Coalition raises scholarships and mini-grants for students Pre-K
to Adult Ed. Since 1996 the coalition has awarded $73,000 in scholarships,
mini grants and adopt a class.
During construction of Units 3 & 4 in 1991-1993, FPL provided $300,000
to the Martin County School district for the construction of an
adult teaching facility. This facility is now the One-Stop Center
in Indiantown.
In 2001, FPL renewed its community leadership position with a $50,000
contribution to the YMCA for a day care facility.
In early 2003, FPL identified and helped jump start another worthy
community effort by donating $50,000 to the Indiantown Non Profit
Housing for a Shared Service Center in Indiantown. The Shared Service
Center will benefit the following agencies: Indiantown Non Profit
Housing, Inc., Jesus House of Hope, Council on Aging, Big Brothers
and Big Sisters of MC, American Red Cross, Hibiscus Children's Center,
SCORE - Senior Core of Retired Executives, Salvation Army, Martin
County Parks & Recreation, Volunteers in Medicine, Children's Services
Council, The Fatherhood Initiative, Indiantown NAC/Martin County,
Hospice of Martin County, All for Youth, Inc., Drug Abuse Treatment
Association.
