Q. Was Martin planned for additional expansion?
A. Yes. When site certification was issued in 1991 for the most recent generating plant additions, the site was deemed suitable for further capacity expansion. Since then Martin has been identified as a preferred location in each of FPL's Ten Year Power Plant Site Plans for the past decade.
Q. What is FPL's philosophy regarding new technology and fuel choices?
A. It is FPL's strategy to add the most efficient type of power plants when new generation is needed and to make use of a variety of fuels to remain flexible to the best economic choices. The Martin plant is a good example of a site designed to ensure fuel diversity and stability for FPL customers.
Q. What are the environmental benefits of the expansion project?
A. The project uses an existing power plant site to meet growing energy demands, which minimizes potential environmental impacts by using existing facilities, such as access roads, substations and transmission lines and rail facilities. This directly avoids impacts to wetlands or wildlife habitat.
Q. What is FPL's environmental record?
A. FPL has been recognized as one of the cleanest generators of electricity in Florida and the U.S. We operate 34 generating units at 14 plant sites. Over the past decade we voluntarily have made significant reductions in plant emissions - 28 percent less sulfur dioxide and 41 percent less nitrogen oxide. The addition of new state-of-the-art, natural gas-fired combined-cycle generating technology at Martin is consistent with FPL's move to greater use of cleaner fuels.
