FPL's Turkey Point Proposal
Responding to growth in South Florida
In August 2003, FPL announced the need to add new resources to begin serving customers in 2007 and our plan to meet that need by adding a new combined-cycle generating unit to our existing Turkey Point site about 25 miles south of Miami near Florida City.
Following nearly two years of work, FPL earned the final approval in February 2005 to begin construction. The new 1,150 megawatt power generating unit, capable of serving the equivalent of 230,000 homes and businesses, began serving customers in May 2007.
Highlights of the Turkey Point Project
- Features a 1,150 megawatt highly-efficient, state-of-the-art combined-cycle generator.
- Utilizes clean-burning natural gas as fuel.
- Capable of serving an additional 230,000 homes and businesses.
- Makes use of an existing power plant site and existing plant infrastructure.
- Helps balance the FPL system grid.
