Never Give Your Credit Card Number To A Caller Claiming To Be FPL

FPL has learned of a telephone scam targeting our customers, and we want to protect you from becoming a victim. The following information is designed to help protect you and report fraudulent or suspicious activity that puts your personal information at risk.

Watch out for:

A call from someone claiming to be an FPL representative asking you to provide a credit card number over the phone in order to avoid having your electric service disconnected. These are not FPL employees!

What FPL does to protect you

FPL never calls customers to demand payment through a credit card. While FPL makes outgoing calls to collect overdue bills, nearly all of these are made through an IVR (interactive voice response). In such cases, customers are given an option on how to pay. If a credit card is chosen, the call is transferred to our vendor, Western Union®Speedpay®.

If you are a business customer: Only a few calls to business customers are made by FPL representatives, but the customer is still given a choice of how to pay and transferred to Western Union®Speedpay® for credit card payments.

How to protect yourself

Never give your credit card number over the phone to a caller claming to be FPL! Any FPL representative needing to phone a customer will identify themselves and be willing to give a call back number. If you have any doubt about the identity of a person claiming to represent FPL, please call the Customer Care Center at the number printed on the bottom of your bill.

If you are a victim of fraud, a scam or believe your personal information has been compromised, we recommend you take the necessary actions to promptly report it and protect yourself:

  1. Please call the Customer Care Center at the number printed on the bottom of your bill.
  2. Notify your credit card company.
  3. File a report with your local police department.
  4. Report fraud by filing a complaint with the FTC.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, provides comprehensive guidance on what consumers and businesses can do to report fraud and stay protected. They also have an online complaint filing system. You can visit their identity theft website at www.consumer.gov/idtheft
