What is CDR?

Commercial Demand Reduction (CDR) is a load management program that can save your business thousands of dollars each year, if you qualify. The CDR program reduces FPL’s system peak demand during capacity shortfalls or system emergencies.

Why it helps us all

By reducing power usage during peak demand periods, CDR is helping to delay the need for expensive, new power plants while providing your business the opportunity to substantially reduce your electric bill.

Benefits of CDR

Since 1988, many Florida businesses have participated in demand reduction programs.

  • The CDR program is ideal for businesses with and without back-up generation, including banks, high-tech facilities, correctional facilities, medical facilities, water and sewer plants, mining, manufacturing, and municipal services.
  • Your business earns significant monthly credits by allowing FPL to reduce your electric load by a predetermined amount, with a minimum of 200 kW.
  • This can amount to thousands of dollars in savings each year.

Will my business be inconvenienced?

Capacity shortfalls and system emergencies are rare occurrences, resulting in very few control periods over the last decade. Your business will receive monthly incentives for its participation in the CDR program regardless of whether or not you experience a control period.

How it works

  • An FPL representative will provide you with an analysis of your company’s electric bill, estimated cost savings from CDR, a control circuit wiring diagram, and can also assist you with determining the expected payback period.
  • If you benefit from CDR and decide to participate in the program, FPL will install a load management device at your facility.
  • When a load control event is planned, FPL will send an advance notification to the device letting it know a load control event will occur at a specified time.
  • When the load control event occurs, the device will automatically shed the predetermined controlled load, and your generator (if applicable) will start.
  • Once FPL’s system demand has returned to a manageable level, you will receive a pre-release notification approximately 15 minutes before the load control event ends.
  • When the load control event is over, your controlled load will transfer back to FPL’s system.
