FPL’s
Sunshine Energy® program approaches 6,000 customer milestone
FPL customers make local “green” program
fastest growing in the Southeast
JUNO BEACH, Fla. – Florida
Power & Light Company announced today that nearly 6,000 FPL
customers are now enrolled in its new Sunshine Energy® program.
FPL says these enrollments for cleaner electricity have taken
place in less than six months, making the Sunshine Energy program
the fastest growing green pricing program in the Southeast. Furthermore,
at the current rate, this green power program will be the largest
in the Southeast by the end of the year.
FPL, which voluntarily launched Sunshine
Energy to its 3.6 million residential customers in February 2004,
does not profit from this program in any way. The company is
offering this program to its customers to continue its tradition
of supporting clean energy initiatives.
FPL’s Sunshine Energy initiative,
also known as a “green pricing” program, is offered
as a choice for those who want to support cleaner, renewable
electric generation and reduce the demand for electricity generated
from fossil fuels. By participating in the program, FPL customers
can reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions caused by their electricity
use. CO2 is a greenhouse gas that contributes to global warming.
Fastest growing program
There are currently more than 500 similar
green power programs offered by utilities throughout the U.S.
In the Southeast, for example, 121 utilities offer renewable
energy programs to their customers. According to data from the
U.S Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory
(NREL), FPL’s Sunshine Energy program is currently the
fastest growing program in the Southeast and the second largest
program in the Southeast. Additionally, FPL’s program has
the lowest price per kilowatt-hour in the Southeast and one of
the lowest in price per kilowatt-hour nationwide.
“We applaud FPL for the successful
launch of its green pricing program,” said Lori Bird, senior
energy analyst with NREL. “According to NREL’s data,
FPL’s program is on track to be among the top 10 utility
green pricing programs nationally in terms of customer participants.”
"The results speak for themselves; Floridians
care about their impact on the environment and many of them have
done their part to increase cleaner energy purchases in Florida," said
Bill Hamilton, vice president of Customer Service for FPL. "We
want to thank those customers who are demonstrating their support
for the environment and making Sunshine Energy a part of their
electricity purchase.”
The program
Purchasing cleaner electricity is one
of the most powerful things an individual can do to reduce air
pollution. By signing up for the Sunshine Energy program, the
average household in Florida can avoid contributing more than
10,000 pounds of CO2 emissions each year – or as much as
taking their car off the road for a year. This is a significant
reduction in the amount of CO2 an average household emits in
a year.
When customers choose FPL’s Sunshine
Energy program they will pay only $9.75 extra each month to ensure
1,000 kilowatt hours of cleaner electricity is produced by generators
serving Florida and other states nationwide. Customers will support cleaner electricity
generated from wind, solar and bio-energy. The monthly charge
will appear on the FPL electric bill.
An important element of the Sunshine Energy
program is FPL’s commitment to build new renewable facilities
in the state of Florida. For every 10,000 customers who sign
up for Sunshine Energy, FPL will provide 150 kW of solar capacity
in Florida – twice as large as one of the state’s
largest solar facilities. That equals 15,000 square feet, which
is about one-third the size of a regulation football field. FPL
says it will be announcing the location for the first solar facility
in the coming weeks.

There are three easy ways for customers
to enroll in the Sunshine Energy program:

FPL will also have Sunshine Energy representatives at 10 Florida

and home games this year.
New Marketing campaign
FPL will launch a new marketing campaign
later this month to promote Sunshine Energy. Hundreds of thousands
of FPL customers will receive enrollment forms in the mail starting
Aug. 20th. The direct mail pieces communicate how the Sunshine
Energy program works and the benefits for FPL customers in participating
