FPL launches statewide partnership with Habitat for Humanity

“BuildSmart for Humanity” to build 300 Energy-Efficient homes throughout Florida

JUNO BEACH, Fla. – Florida Power & Light Company today announced a new partnership with Habitat for Humanity to build energy-efficient homes across the state. As part of the company’s commitment to making a positive difference in the communities it serves, FPL is launching BuildSmart for Humanity, bringing together FPL’s BuildSmart program for energy-efficient new home construction, and Habitat for Humanity, to build homes for families in need.

Working with Habitat affiliates in 32 counties across the state, the 300 BuildSmart for Humanity homes will be more energy-efficient, making them more affordable to maintain. The BuildSmart for Humanity partnership will ensure that each home is upgraded with energy-efficient air conditioning and attic insulation, which will keep homes cooler and energy bills lower for these first-time homeowners.

“Investing in the communities we serve is very important to FPL. We appreciate the opportunity to help make dreams come true for hundreds of families,” said Jeff Bartel, FPL vice president of corporate external affairs. “FPL is not just helping build communities, it is helping to build smart communities by adding energy conservation measures that benefit the homeowners and the Florida environment.”

In 2005, FPL is investing more than half a million dollars for the program to build six complete homes in various communities in its service territory. The program will also outfit all 300 Habitat homes with the energy-efficient equipment, which will help reduce monthly electric bills by up to 30 percent when compared to similar homes not upgraded to BuildSmart standards. More homes will be built in 2006 and 2007. In addition, FPL is committing hundreds of volunteer man-hours to help with the homes as well as support from energy advisors to help guide the new BuildSmart for Humanity homeowners as they manage their home energy needs.

“BuildSmart for Humanity is a groundbreaking program that will not only build new homes for deserving families, but also will help these homeowners keep their energy bills as low as possible,” said Carolyn Vickey, executive director of Habitat for Humanity in Palm Beach County Florida. “Homeowners can reduce energy bills with the FPL BuildSmart construction helping them make managing their new homes easier and less stressful.”

FPL encourages new home builders to put BuildSmart features into new homes. As more people move to Florida, the demand for energy increases. BuildSmart homes are energy efficient, which helps conserve Florida’s natural resources. Overall, FPL energy conservation programs, including BuildSmart, have saved enough electricity to postpone the need for 10 additional power plants in Florida.
