FPL hosts community open house, shares information about a new power line to serve Flagler and St. Johns Counties

JUNO BEACH, Fla.– Florida Power & Light Co. announced today an open house to be held Thursday, April 21 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Memorial Lutheran Church of Martyrs fellowship hall (3375 US Highway 1 South) in St. Augustine. FPL is hosting the open house to share information and gather community input on its plan to build a new transmission line to serve the growing electric needs of homes and businesses in St. Johns and Flagler Counties. The new power line will join an existing substation located on SR 207 southwest of St. Augustine to a proposed substation located west of US 1 and Matanzas Woods Parkway.

St. Johns and Flagler Counties are two of the fastest growing counties in FPL’s service territory. The number of FPL customers has grown 28 percent in St. Johns County and 61 percent in Flagler County over the past five years. FPL says the new, overhead transmission line must be in place by 2008 in order to maintain service reliability in the area.

Because the 230 kilovolt transmission line is expected to be more than 15 miles long and will cross county lines it will be certified through the Transmission Line Siting Act as required by Florida law.

“This open house is just one way we’re seeking local community input about the new transmission line project,” said Bob Coleman, external affairs manager for FPL. “By meeting with interested residential and commercial customers, government agencies and elected officials during the route selection process, we will work out a plan that best meets the needs of our customers.”

In addition to the open house, letters have been sent out to all customers and property owners within the study area and a mailing list was developed of interested customers for ongoing communication. Those interested in the project but unable to attend the open house may obtain information and contribute to the route selection process by emailing stjohnsflagler@FPL.com, visiting FPL’s Web site at www.FPL.com or calling (800) 693-3267.
