FPL breaks ground on a BuildSmart® for Humanity home
in Miami-Dade County

FPL program builds energy-efficient homes for families who need them most

JUNO BEACH, Fla. -- Florida Power & Light Company is ready to “raise the roof” on a BuildSmart® for Humanity home to be built in Miami-Dade County. The “roof raising” ceremony where FPL and Habitat for Humanity® volunteers will erect the roof trusses will take place Saturday, April 1, 2006; 8:30 a.m. at 12940 SW 242 Terrace in Princeton.

BuildSmart® for Humanity brings together FPL’s BuildSmart® program, which promotes construction of new energy-efficient homes and Habitat for Humanity®, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to building homes for low-income families. Through the FPL Group Foundation, FPL has committed more than half a million dollars for the construction of energy-efficient BuildSmart® homes throughout its service territory.

“FPL and its employees live and work in the communities we serve and there is no better way for us to show our commitment to community building than by helping families attain the dream of home ownership,” said Jeff Bartel, FPL vice president of corporate external affairs for FPL. FPL employees are participating through FPL’s Volunteer Corp donating hundreds of man-hours to help build the BuildSmart® homes.

BuildSmart® homes are more energy-efficient, making them more affordable to maintain. The BuildSmart for Humanity partnership ensures that Habitat for Humanity® homes are equipped with energy-efficient air conditioning and attic insulation, along with other features, which will keep homes cooler and energy bills lower for the homeowner. FPL is also committed to outfitting more than 300 Habitat® homes with BuildSmart® features, making the new homes up to 30 percent more energy efficient when compared to similar homes not upgraded to BuildSmart® standards. FPL energy advisors are providing energy saving guidance to the new homeowners.

FPL energy conservation programs, including BuildSmart®, have saved enough electricity to postpone the need for 10 additional power plants in Florida. For more information about BuildSmart® or any of FPL’s energy conservation programs, visit www.FPL.com.
