Candle history and crafts offered on Family Sunday at FPL’s Energy Encounter
HUTCHINSON ISLAND, Fla. -- Florida Power & Light Company invites families to explore early candles and lamps in “Lighting the World Before Electricity” on Sunday, June 4 at the Energy Encounter. Two fun-filled and informative sessions are planned for 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. at the center located at the St. Lucie nuclear power plant on Hutchinson Island.
Dressed in 1880s period dress, Savanna Preserve State Park’s Tasha Weinstein will compare life of today with that of 100 years ago. Featuring ancient lamps, a variety of candle making methods and the process of making wicked candles, Tasha will showcase reproductions of early lamps and candles. She will also demonstrate how some lamps were lit, and then light some of the candle samples to showcase the distinctive and interesting smells of each.
Following the presentation, participants will make a primitive Canaan oil lamp and a rolled beeswax candle to take home as mementoes of the experience. Performances are free but reservations are requested. Reservations can be made by calling 1-877-FPL-4FUN (1-877-375-4386) or (772) 468-4111.
