FPL continues around-the-clock rapid response to Fay outages in northern part of state

  • FPL asks customers to report power outages
  • FPL reminds customers to take safety precautions

JUNO BEACH, Fla. – Florida Power & Light Company crews continued their around-the-clock response to outages caused by Fay as the tropical storm has continued to move across the state.

Here is an update on restoration timing.  Restoration times are estimates subject to change due to flooding or changes in weather conditions.   

  • Brevard County will be essentially restored by the end of the day.
  • If the weather cooperates, the majority of customers in central Florida, which includes Volusia, Flagler and Seminole counties, will be restored today. The remaining customers should have their service restored by the end of the day tomorrow.
  • In areas north of Flagler, we will be working continuously to restore service wherever it is safe to do so during the course of the storm, and these areas will be essentially restored within 24 hours after the storm clears.
  • In each of these instances, this is for customers who can receive power. In some instances, flooding may prohibit restoration until the water recedes. 

As Fay moves, FPL has been sending additional crews from areas where service has already been restored to assist existing personnel in newly affected areas.

“We realize that the flooding caused by this storm has brought misery to many of our customers. We are devoting all of our efforts and resources to restoring power to all of our customers safely and quickly as possible,” said FPL Director of Customer Support Irene White.   

FPL asks customers to report power outages

As FPL’s crews continue to restore power, some customers may find themselves still without service even though their neighbors have electricity. These customers may be experiencing a more localized problem with their electric service and should contact FPL to report the outage through FPL’s automated system (1-800-4-OUTAGE). Using the FPL account number or their phone number, customers can quickly report their outage. Customers with internet access can also report their outage at www.FPL.com.

FPL reminds customers to take safety precautions

Remember that water and electricity don’t mix. Never allow a power cord to become wet.

  • Stay far away from downed power lines, flooding and debris.
  • Don’t walk in standing water and don’t venture out in the dark because you might not see a downed power line that could be energized and dangerous.  If you see a downed power line, call 911 or call FPL at 1-800-4-OUTAGE.
  • Be very careful around all electrical wires and equipment. If you have any doubts about your home electrical system or are unsure of how to proceed, call a professional, licensed electrician.
  • Customers using a portable generator should check the manufacturer’s recommendations and follow them for proper use. If your plan includes operating a portable generator, wait until the storm has passed and be sure to set it up outside and connect appliances directly to it.  Please do not wire your generator directly to your breaker or fuse box, because the power you generate may flow back into power lines and cause injuries. Only a licensed electrician should connect a generator to a main electrical panel. Never operate a generator inside your home or even in the garage, and keep generators well away from open windows so exhaust does not enter your home or a neighbor’s home.
