Through our proposed ongoing investments, we're investing to make our infrastructure ...

Stronger
We're working to make our infrastructure stronger, in good weather and bad.

Smarter
We're investing in smart technology that gives customers more control and improves reliability. For example:

  • We're testing smart meters now and expect to expand them throughout our service territory over the next several years.
  • Automated communications tell our field offices when a main power line has experienced a brief interruption, so they can take immediate action to prevent an outage or reduce the time customers are without power.
  • Our transmission performance and diagnostic center gives us the ability to predict and address equipment issues before failures occur.

Cleaner
We're doing our part to fight climate change.

More fuel efficient
FPL’s fossil fuel power plant fleet is the most fuel efficient among large-scale utilities nationwide. Using a 2002 baseline, by 2014 our ongoing investments will yield a 20-percent improvement in the efficiency of our power plants and customer savings will total more than $1 billion annually.

Less reliant on any single source of fuel
We're enhancing the operations of our generation facilities to ensure we are less reliant on any single source of fuel. For example:

  • We're investing in existing fossil fuel power generation facilities to improve performance and lower fuel costs for customers.
  • We're investing in existing nuclear power generation facilities to ensure reliable performance over their lifetimes.
  • As new generation facilities are developed, such as solar, they too will contribute to lower fuel costs.
