Residential Sunshine Energy

The Public Service Commission (PSC) voted to terminate the Sunshine Energy program on July 29, 2008.

Sunshine Energy has been one of the best performing renewable energy programs in the nation. We’re grateful to the more than 38,000 FPL customers who voluntarily contributed to the program and made it successful.

Our customers can be proud of the track record of the Sunshine Energy program. Sunshine Energy not only helped to avoid the emission of about 500,000 tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, which is the equivalent of removing 83,000 cars from the road, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, but it did so at a cost that was among the lowest in the country for programs of this type. It allowed customers to reduce their carbon footprint in a cost-effective manner through two means:

  • First, by constructing solar projects such as Rothenbach Park located in Sarasota County. Rothenbach Park today is the largest solar array anywhere in the state of Florida.
  • Second, by allowing customers to invest in renewable energy credits. Forty-one percent of those credits were bought in Florida and the remainder primarily in other southeastern states.

FPL did not object to the termination of the Sunshine Energy program because we in Florida have reached the next phase in promotion of renewable energy in our state. The legislature approved and the governor signed into law an act which appropriately promotes the construction of renewable energy in order to address global climate change. As a result, we have announced our intention to build three new solar projects which will make Florida #2 in the nation in electricity generated by solar energy.

Our customers can be extremely proud of what their contributions accomplished. You can also be assured that FPL remains committed to providing affordable, clean energy solutions that contribute to a better quality of life for all Floridians.
