FPL | Restoration Plan: Making Our Electric Grid Stronger

Making Our Electric System Stronger

Contractor crews replace poles with new spun concrete poles at Pt. Everglades as part of the Storm Secure plan in Ft Lauderale, FLOur commitment to reliability is not about words, it’s about action. Because reliability is about constant improvement, we work every day to make our grid stronger. Our network today meets or exceeds all required safety standards prescribed by the National Electrical Safety Code (NESC). Going forward and pending Florida Public Service Commision approval, we’ll adopt NESC extreme wind velocity zone criteria as our new standard for new distribution construction and system upgrades (up to 150 mph in certain areas).

Priority will be given to main lines serving critical infrastructure facilities and major thoroughfares where businesses that provide all of us with basic necessities such as fuel and food are located.

Targeted facility upgrades
As part of our efforts to harden our electrical network, we are focusing on critical infrastructure facilities. These are the facilities that provide for the health, safety and security of the public, such as hospitals and 911 centers. The following targeted facility upgrades have been completed:

  • Port Everglades – Nearly one-fifth of all of Florida’s energy comes from the petroleum stored and distributed through the port.
  • Port of Palm Beach – The fourth busiest container port in Florida and a major point of entry for utility fuels, water and produce.
  • Jackson Memorial Hospital/UM Hospital Complex – The only adult and pediatric Level 1 Trauma Center in South Florida, a regional referral center for the treatment of burn victims, largest neonatal intensive care unit in Florida and one of only 17 in the nation designated as a Regional Spinal Cord Injury Center.
  • Mount Sinai Hospital/Miami Heart Institute – Most active cardiac program in South Florida, largest memory disorder center in Florida and the only NCI-sponsored Community Clinical Oncology Program.
  • Saint Mary’s Medical Center – The Nicklaus Children’s Hospital is one of only 13 state-designated pediatric trauma referral centers and the state-designated spinal cord injury center.

This extraordinary effort will not finish overnight, but through everyday improvements, and a firm focus on the future, Florida’s reliability will only get better. This is our commitment to FPL customers.

Port of Palm Beach Executive Director, Lori Baer, comments on FPL’s initiative to strengthen the port.
