Using advanced technology for storm response
At FPL, we’re preparing year-round for storm season and always ensuring we’re armed with the most advanced technology to respond and restore your power safely and as quickly as possible. Program Manager of Emergency Preparedness Iliana Rentz manages FPL’s emergency preparedness and response plans for severe weather and hurricanes.
Iliana and her team of experts rely on state-of-the-art tools such as FPL’s Mobile Command Center (MCC) to coordinate with first-responders in the field and help get your lights on faster.
“Our commitment to provide you with electricity you can count on in good weather and bad is reinforced with the availability of advanced tools like the Mobile Command Center. We prepare for storms year-round, and urge you to make a plan and be prepared, too.”

Thanks to advanced technology, the MCC enables us to monitor and manage our network, and provide on-site command and control. In the MCC and in the field, we use a GPS-based tool called Restoration Spatial View, which was developed by our employees. It draws on smart grid data to help pinpoint and resolve power issues quickly, giving our crews access to real-time information and allowing them to communicate with customers’ meters to ensure your power has been restored. The MCC is also equipped with a mast camera with zoom capabilities of half a mile to obtain images and monitor emergency situations from a safe distance.
The MCC’s state-of-the-art capabilities help streamline the restoration of electric service by providing immediate onsite coordination, enabling timely and accurate communications and helping adapt our response to the level of need, so we can help get your life back to normal.
“Our priority is to be able to respond quickly and be there for you when you need us the most,” added Iliana.
