From preheating to cleanup, your appliances will be putting in extra work. A few simple moves can help your kitchen run more efficiently this Thanksgiving.
How to serve up our favorite holiday traditions while saving energy
Between preparing the meal, making room in the refrigerator, and cleaning up afterward, several appliances work harder than usual. The good news is you don't have to change your holiday traditions to help keep energy use in check. A few simple habits can help you be more energy efficient without changing the traditions that make the day special.
Let's answer a few common questions about your refrigerator, oven, dishwasher and other appliances that tend to work a little harder while entertaining.
Does a packed refrigerator use more energy?
Not necessarily. A well-stocked refrigerator can hold its temperature efficiently, but it still needs space for cold air to circulate. Avoid packing shelves too tightly or blocking air vents, which can make the refrigerator work harder to keep food at the proper temperature.
Should I keep opening the oven to check on the turkey?
It's tempting, but every time you open the oven door, heat escapes and the oven has to work to get back to the set temperature. Instead, use the oven light and window when possible, to check your food.
If you're baking multiple dishes, cook them together at the same temperature whenever possible. Plan the order of your dishes before preheating so the oven is ready when you are and does not stay on longer than needed.
What's the best way to tackle cleanup?
Wait until you have a full load before running the dishwasher. If your dishwasher has an air-dry setting, using it instead of the heated drying cycle can also help reduce energy use.
Do I really need my second refrigerator?
If you have a second refrigerator, use it only when you need extra storage. Older refrigerators can use significantly more electricity than newer models, so unplug the second unit when it is no longer needed.
The bottom line
Hosting Thanksgiving doesn't have to mean using a lot more energy. A few simple habits can help your appliances work efficiently while you enjoy time with family and friends.
