Reasons why you may be using more energy

  1. Thermostat: Your thermostat may not be working correctly, or the temperature setting is too high or low. We recommend setting it between 74 to 78° and 68° in cool weather.
  2. Leaks or inefficiencies in your home:
    • Water heater leaking – if your water bill is also high, this may be the reason why.
    • A leaky water fixture – can cause the water heater to run constantly to reheat water in the tank.
    • Check your ducts – leaky ducts can cause your A/C to work harder.
    • Using heat strips – the heating system can have a stuck strip/emergency heating element in the “on” position and be using energy even when it appears to be off at the thermostat. This issue can also cause your system to heat and cool at the same time when in A/C cooling mode. Also, if you increase the thermostat more than 2° at a time, it can cost more than $20/day. 
    • An older A/C unit – your HVAC system may need servicing if it is low on charge or have other elements that need attention to run properly such as a dirty, clogged or broken coils.
    • Check pool pumps and irrigation pumps to ensure they are running only during scheduled time periods.
  3. Changes in usage patterns: If you started using your A/C or heating system after being away a long time, doing lots of laundry or using more electrical appliances or devices, this could be the cause of increased energy consumption.
  4. Weather: Weather can have a significant impact on energy consumption, especially in extreme conditions like hot or cold weather.
