Safely drive and charge your EV before and after a storm

Your safety matters to us, especially during severe weather. Whether you’re an FPL EVolution® Home customer or using our public chargers, don’t forget to consider your EV in your storm preparation and recovery plans.

Before the storm: Prepare, plan and charge

  • Stay informed: Keep your EV fully charged before a storm.
  • Plan your route: If evacuating, plan your route and check for available public chargers along the way using the FPL EVolution app or other EV charging resources. Enable push notifications for timely updates.
  • Park safely: If you choose to ride out the storm at home, park your EV in a safe, elevated area away from trees and poles. If possible, park your vehicle inside a garage or carport.

After the storm: Vehicle and charging safety

  • Backup charging: In case of power outages, have a backup charging plan. Monitor post-storm conditions to ensure it’s safe to travel and check the FPL EVolution app for updates on charger availability. Refer to other EV resources for additional charging options.
  • Assess your EV: After a storm, check your EV for damage before driving it. If you suspect flood damage, DO NOT plug into a charger or drive it. Have an automotive specialist inspect your car to prevent any possible hazards.

Frequently asked questions

General EV charging

Can I charge my electric vehicle during a storm, or should it be avoided?

Charge your EV before a storm makes landfall if conditions allow. Due to safety hazards, avoid charging during a storm to avoid potential damage to your vehicle or charging equipment. During a storm, unplug your EV from a home or public charger and secure charging cables to minimize risk of water damage.

How should I store my electric vehicle during a storm?

Store EVs in a garage or covered area to protect them from storm-related hazards. If parking outside, secure your vehicle in a location away from trees, power lines, or objects that could cause damage during high winds. Avoid parking in low-lying areas to prevent possible flooding.

How can I safely charge my EV after a storm?

Check your vehicle for damage before driving it and if you suspect flood damage, DO NOT plug into a charger or drive it. Have an automotive specialist inspect your car to prevent any possible hazards.

Do I need an adapter to charge at FPL EVolution stations?

Our stations have CCS and CHAdeMO connectors suitable for most vehicle makes and models. We can accommodate Tesla vehicles with a CCS or CHAdeMO adaptor available from Tesla. Select locations have NACS adapters for Teslas; filter your search in the app for this feature. Drivers using our level 2 chargers should use the J1772 adaptor that came with your vehicle.

What is the risk of driving my electric vehicle in flooded areas after a storm?

Like gas-powered cars, driving an EV in flooded areas during or after a storm can pose risks. Water damage to electrical systems may lead to power loss and safety hazards. Avoid driving through flooded roads to protect the vehicle and ensure personal safety.

Public charging

Will FPL EVolution public chargers be open before a storm hits?

We encourage you to get a full charge before a storm arrives. Following a storm, our EV chargers will be in operation as long as there is power in the area. You can check the FPL EVolution app for station availability and should follow local and state safety guidelines for driving in severe weather.

How can I charge during an evacuation or if the stations don’t have power?

You can check our station availability on the FPL EVolution app, which will be updated in real time.

Can I use FPL EVolution chargers if I am not an FPL customer?

Yes, our EV chargers are open to the general public. You will need to download the FPL EVolution app and set up an account, then follow the instructions on the charger screen.

Are FPL EVolution charging stations equipped with backup power sources to ensure I have availability during a storm?

Home charging

How should I prepare my EV home charger for a storm?

Before a storm arrives, unplug the charging handle from your EV. This helps to prevent electrical hazards.

If I lose power, when will my EV home charger turn back on?

Once power is restored to your home, your EV charger will automatically come back online.

If the area in my home where my EV charger is located is flooded, what do I do?

  • Prioritize your safety: Avoid flooded areas. If you’re unsure, seek assistance from a professional electrician.
  • Avoid touching electrical equipment: Refrain from touching any electrical equipment in floodwater, including your EV charger. Water conducts electricity and poses a risk of electrical shock.
  • Contact a professional: Once water has receded, contact an electrician to evaluate your home’s electrical system. If you have an FPL EVolution Home charger and suspect damage, call us at 833-919-0939.
  • Assess your vehicle: To determine if your EV is safe to drive after a flood, consult an automotive specialist for evaluation and guidance. They can assess water damage and provide repair or replacement recommendations if needed.
