There are many factors that can impact your electric bill. The most common cause of a high bill is weather. Your air conditioner is one of the largest energy users in your home. So, when it’s running longer, your bill will be higher. For example, in hotter months, your A/C can run up to twice as long as it does in cooler months to keep your home at the same temperature. Conversely, heating a home can also be expensive, especially in Florida where the heating systems are often times inefficient and can cost a lot more to operate. In fact, strip or electric resistance-based heating uses two to three times more energy than air conditioning.
Other reasons for a higher than normal bill can include a variation in the billing cycle days. The number of days included in your monthly bill can vary between 28 and 35 days due to holidays and other factors. So even if you use the same amount of electricity per day, your bill may be higher or lower from one month to the next depending on the number of service days included in your bill. Yes, a program named SurgeShield is offered by FPL Energy Services, Inc., an affiliate of FPL. When power surges enter through your home's electric wiring, it can cause major damage to your appliances and systems. SurgeShield is installed at your meter to protect against these types of power surges before they happen. It’s available to customers who live in a single-family home, duplex or townhome.
To enroll in the FPL Energy Services’ program, you can order SurgeShield online or call 1-888-NOSURGE (1-888-667-8743). Representatives are available to take your call from 8 a.m. - 9 p.m. EST Monday through Friday.
SurgeShield is a voluntary program. You can stay on the program as long as or as short as you wish. You may terminate your program at any time and the monthly charges on your electric bill will stop on your next billing cycle; however, we encourage customers to try the program for at least 12 months and experience the benefits year round.
To cancel SurgeShield protection, please call 1-888-NOSURGE (1-888-667-8743). Representatives are available from 8 a.m. - 9 p.m. EST Monday through Friday.
FPL Energy Services’ SurgeShield program provides participating customers with protection for their home’s major motor-driven appliances, such as the A/C, refrigerator, washer, dryer, well and pool pumps (within 4 feet of your home), dishwasher, ovens/range, hot water heater and ceiling fans, from damaging power surges that can enter through the incoming electrical service. It is a whole-house surge protection program. The UL Listed surge protector device is installed on your electric meter (or hard-wired for some applications) by a licensed independent electrical contractor.
