What is the FPL BuildSmart program?

The FPL BuildSmart Program encourages the construction of energy-efficient homes that perform at least 10% better than current building codes. By promoting homes that use less energy, BuildSmart helps reduce the overall demand for electricity generation, which supports FPL's efforts to keep rates affordable for all customers.

How much is the incentive/rebate per home when participating in the BuildSmart program?

FPL provides payment for each HERS-rated and/or Energy Star-rated home. Contact us for the latest payment amounts.

How can my company participate in the BuildSmart program?

Florida State licensed builders can participate by enrolling to become a participating contractor. Complete the "Contact Us" form below to get started.

What are the eligibility requirements for a home to qualify for incentives?

Homes must be in FPL service territory, must be less than 12 months old, have whole-house electric cooling supplied by a central cooling system, and have a passing HERS score or an EPI score of 85 or below.

What types of energy efficiency measures are required to qualify for rebates?

Some measures that achieve the BuildSmart standard include high-performance HVAC systems, energy-efficient windows and doors, proper insulation, high-efficiency water heaters, among others.

Can I still participate in FPL BuildSmart if I do not have my homes HERS rated?

  • Yes, the home must meet the same qualifications (10% above code), but no payment will be made. Builders will still be eligible to receive FPL marketing materials and collateral.
  • Home buyers will also receive an FPL BuildSmart welcome packet and certificate with energy efficiency recommendations.

How do I apply for the BuildSmart rebates?

Participating builders (or the builder's rater) submit to FPL the HERS rating documents for each home they wish to receive the payment for.

How long does it take to receive the rebate once approved?

BuildSmart payments are processed within 45 days of receiving your completed submission.

Can multi-family buildings, such as apartments, qualify for the BuildSmart program?

No, FPL BuildSmart is designed for single-family homes including attached dwellings such as duplexes and townhomes, where each housing unit is separated by a ground-to-roof wall and has no unit constructed above or below.

Where can I find detailed guidelines and standards for the BuildSmart program?

Detailed guidelines and standards are available on the FPL BuildSmart program website or by contacting the program support team.

What additional benefits does participation in the BuildSmart program offer?

In addition to financial payments, builders have access to FPL BuildSmart marketing materials and support.
