Unlike traditional rates where the cost is always the same, TOU rates reflect the fluctuating demand for electricity. During peak hours, the cost is about 26 cents per kilowatt-hour, while off-peak hours cost around 9 cents.*
* This is an approximation and may vary by location.
To realize savings, customers must use less energy during the “peak” hours.
Rodney travels for work and owns an EV that he only charges during off-peak hours, he may save on the TOU rate.
With lower energy usage, and being home during peak hours, Valerie would not save on the TOU rate.
To benefit from TOU, you must shift electricity use away from peak hours. *
