How it works

Unlike traditional rates where the cost is always the same, TOU rates reflect the fluctuating demand for electricity. During peak hours, the cost is about 26 cents per kilowatt-hour, while off-peak hours cost around 9 cents.*

Enrollment terms and limitations

  • Requires annual commitment
  • Enrollment takes about three months
  • Requires a new meter

  • Cannot participate in FPL On Call,® FPL Budget Billing® or FPL EVolution®

Is a TOU rate plan right for you?

To realize savings, customers must use less energy during the “peak” hours.

man and woman in kitchen

Rodney:

  • Uses over 1,000 kWh of energy per month
  • Sets the A/C to 78 degrees or higher during peak hours
  • Has no one home during peak hours Monday-Friday
  • Uses timers to run small appliances during off-peak times

Rodney travels for work and owns an EV that he only charges during off-peak hours, he may save on the TOU rate.

man and woman looking at thermostat

Valerie:

  • Uses less than 1000 kwh per month
  • Sets the A/C to lower than 78 degrees during peak hours
  • Works from home and is mostly at home during the day Monday-Friday
  • Has no timers and runs washer, dryer, pool pump, or other appliances during the day

With lower energy usage, and being home during peak hours, Valerie would not save on the TOU rate.

Timing is everything

To benefit from TOU, you must shift electricity use away from peak hours. *
