How it works:

Note: You will be required to participate in the pilot program for five years.

Step 1. Complete the application and agree to the Optional Residential Smart Panel Equipment Agreement at the end to help determine if you are eligible to participate.

Step 2. We will review your information and contact you regarding next steps.

Step 3. Once participation is confirmed, a qualified electrician from FPL’s trusted network will contact you to schedule the smart panel installation.

Step 4. After the electrician installs the smart panel and you download the app to your smartphone, you’ll be ready to start managing and monitoring select appliances. Within three months of installation, you will receive a one-time $100 bill credit to thank you for your participation.

Step 5. Share your experience. We will periodically email you short surveys to obtain your feedback.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a smart panel?

A panel that is smart. Although a smart panel may come in several forms, it is a wall-mounted box or panel that is electrically connected to your home’s wiring system. Inside are Wi-Fi enabled switches that measure the electrical use of connected appliances. The smart panel comes with an app for your smartphone that allows you to control and monitor the largest electrical appliances in your home.

What type of appliances will I be able to manage and monitor?

You will be able to control and monitor up to six large appliances, including your central air conditioner, electrical heating system, electric water heater, pool pump, EV charger, and other in-home circuits like outdoor lighting, etc.

Can a smart panel help me save energy?

Yes! With a smart panel you can schedule appliances, like your water heater and pool pump, to only operate during certain hours, conserving electricity and saving you money. Also, with a smart panel you can gain insights into how much electricity other appliances use to help you manage your consumption. For example, you can monitor the difference that various thermostat settings have on your air conditioning usage so you can better anticipate impacts to your bill.

How much will the smart panel installation cost me?

Nothing. FPL will install the smart panel free of charge, and there is no monthly fee to participate in the Smart Panel Pilot. And to thank you for your participation, you will receive a one-time $100 bill credit within three months of installation.

What if the smart panel malfunctions?

The electrical service to your home and appliances will not be interrupted if the smart panel malfunctions. However, you may temporarily lose the ability to control and monitor the appliances from your smartphone. While we don’t expect customers’ panels to require maintenance during the five-year term, any necessary maintenance will be handled by FPL.

What happens if I need to cancel my participation?

In most cases, FPL will remove the panel and bill you for the removal cost. The removal cost will depend on your specific circumstances but may cost about $500.

What will FPL do with the smart panel during the pilot?

FPL’s primary objective for the FPL Smart Panel Pilot is to gather data and learnings regarding customer impressions of the smart panel and its operational characteristics.
The pilot focuses on evaluating smart panel technology and customers’ use of it. During the pilot, you will be able to use the smart panel app to manage your appliances and better understand how specific appliances contribute to your total electrical use. The pilot will also evaluate how FPL can interact with your smart panel to help manage the electrical grid during peak load conditions. FPL will occasionally interrupt large appliance circuits for short periods of time to test this capability.
