FPL identified an issue with customer-owned electrical equipment at your property. The issue will fall into one of the categories below.

Identify your category

Hazardous condition: A hazardous condition involving customer-owned equipment that creates a risk of fire, electrocution or serious injury. Service has been disconnected until repairs are completed by a licensed electrician for your safety.

Damaged Customer-Owned Cable: A condition involving customer-owned cable that is faulted or malfunctioning is preventing FPL from energizing service. Service has been disconnected until repairs are completed by a licensed electrician for your safety.

Non-standard condition (not an immediate hazard): Customer-owned equipment does not meet FPL standards. These conditions can limit FPL’s ability to safely access, maintain or service equipment (for example, a meter box that cannot be safely reached because it is mounted too high or has been enclosed by a garage, room addition, cage around the meter or another structure that does not allow access to FPL equipment). You have 20 days to take action or service will be disconnected.

Steps to repair your customer-owned equipment:

If your notice is for a hazardous condition:

  1. Hire a licensed electrician to repair the hazard.
  2. Your electrician will obtain any required permits and inspections based on the scope of work and municipal requirements.
  3. If your electrician requires for the service line to be disconnected to safely make the repairs, your electrician must call FPL at 800-226-3545 and request an emergency untap of service.
  4. After repairs are complete, your electrician must call FPL at 800-226-3545 and provide their license number or inspection, if needed so we can safely restore power.

If your notice is for damaged customer-owned cable:

  1. Hire a licensed electrician to repair the cable.
  2. Your electrician will obtain any required permits and inspections based on municipal requirements.
  3. Your electrician is required to coordinate a standby appointment with your local FPL construction office to facilitate repulling the cable. Contact information is available at fpl.com/construction under “Contact an FPL Construction Office Near You.” Inspection must be coordinated within the allotted appointment timeframe and charges for this appointment will apply. After repairs are complete and your electrician has provided their license number or passed inspection, we will safely restore power at the coordinated appointment.

If your notice is for a non-standard condition (not an immediate hazard)

You will receive a letter with the due date for repair (20 days).

  1. Hire a licensed electrician to make the required repairs or corrections. For service to be disconnected, your electrician must schedule the disconnection with FPL at 888-488-1624. Your electrician must obtain the required permits and inspections based on municipal requirements.
  2. You must correct the non-standard condition before the due date or power will be disconnected due to non-compliance.
  3. If you have exceeded the 20 days for repairs, your service has been disconnected. After repairs are complete and a passed inspection has been received by FPL, your electrician must call FPL at 888-488-1624 to schedule the reconnection. Note: Same day reconnection is not guaranteed, reconnection is subject to appointment availability.

What equipment is your responsibility

You are responsible for repairing electrical equipment attached to your property, which typically includes:

  • Weatherhead
  • Attachment hardware
  • Service stack
  • Riser
  • Meter box
  • Ground wire and rod
  • For mobile or manufactured homes, this may include the pole with an attached meter box.
  • For commercial customers, this would include underground service cable. For residential customers, if the service line is customer-owned this would be inclusive of your underground service cable.

Power cannot be safely restored until a licensed electrician repairs the electrical hazard; you are responsible for coordinating with the electrician to make those repairs.

If you rent your home, please contact your landlord or property manager immediately. They are likely responsible for arranging and completing the necessary repairs.

FPL handles the overhead service line and electric meter. For underground service, FPL is responsible only if the residential service isn't customer-owned; commercial customers maintain their own underground service.
