Port Everglades Next Generation Clean Energy Center
To cost-effectively meet anticipated customer demand for electricity in 2016, FPL has filed a need petition with the Florida Public Service Commission and a Site Certification Application with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection to seek state approval to modernize its 1960s-era Port Everglades plant into a high-efficiency, combined-cycle natural gas energy center. If FPL is able to proceed with this $1 billion investment, the company expects to be able to generate cleaner, more efficient power and produce more than $400 million in net savings for customers -- over and above the cost of construction.
The websites for the Florida Department of Environmental Protection and the Division of Administrative Hearings will have information available, such as current dates for public meetings, upcoming deadlines and copies of the application.
