FPL | Storm Center | Reliable Service

Committed to Providing Reliable Service

At FPL, we remain committed to providing reliable service everyday, rain or shine. That is why we have plans and programs in place to continuously improve our service. While no electric system can be 100% hurricane and interruption proof, these efforts are part of the work we’re doing everyday to provide you with safe and reliable service, now and in the future.

Infrastructure Hardening

This is a comprehensive program that includes a number of system strengthening efforts designed to better withstand the historical high winds experienced within specific areas. Improvements include the addition of poles to the system or replacing of current poles with stronger ones.

Tree Trimming

Trees which have overgrown and may make contact with our power lines are trimmed away from the lines. This is a very important proactive maintenance program that helps prevent damage to our electric system. Your support in allowing us access to trees that are on your property is essential to help prevent outages that are caused by trees and other vegetation; especially during windy weather.

Pole Inspections

Poles in your area are inspected for any damage or weathering that could potentially affect your service in the near future. Any concerns identified are corrected accordingly with measures such as replacement or reinforcement to increase the system’s resiliency.

Thermovision

We combine an infrared inspection of overhead power lines with a visual inspection to detect potentially faulty equipment and replace it as needed before it causes a power interruption. We inspect approximately 25% of our main lines annually, about 4,400 miles of lines, resulting in fewer customer interruptions.

System Expansion

As Florida’s population continues to grow, so does the need for safe and reliable electric service. To that end, we are always working towards expanding our system in the best way possible, cooperating with communities on an individual basis to minimize any impact.

Using automated feeder switches

These devices are used by FPL and other utility companies to open and close electrical circuits. Increasingly, the operation and monitoring of these switches is being automated, resulting in fewer and shorter service interruptions for customers.

Monitoring Our System

We consistently watch over and evaluate our system to improve performance.  This includes identifying potentially faulty equipment and replacing it as needed before it causes more momentaries and interruptions, ensuring that all our customers can depend on quality electric service.
