What is ALICE?

ALICE stands for Asset, Limited, Income, Constrained, Employed. It’s a United Way measure for families who earn too much for government help but still struggle to afford basic needs.

How it Works

  1. Check your eligibility: Use the ALICE Calculator on the United Way website. Select your state and county, enter your household size, and see if you qualify.
  2. Learn ways to save: Explore the energy-saving walkthrough to learn ways to keep your bill as low as possible.
  3. Verify your income: After completing savings walkthrough, use the link provided to verify your income online with our agency partner, The Salvation Army.
  4. Receive your credit: Once the Salvation Army verifies your income, FPL will be notified of your eligibility. If your account meets all qualifications, you will get confirmation within 60 days that your $200 bill credit has been applied.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if my household is eligible and meets ALICE criteria?

Use the ALICE Calculator on the United Way website to quickly check if your income and household size qualify. Enter your household details and county. If you see “this household is an ALICE household,” you’re eligible.

If you are above the ALICE threshold, there are still other programs that might help you save. Check out other savings options.

Do I need to provide proof of income?

When you apply through our trusted partner, The Salvation Army, you’ll need to provide documentation that verifies your income. This ensures the program reaches families who truly qualify under ALICE guidelines. This documentation can include any of the following:

  • Pay stub
  • Social Security Disability payment
  • VA disability pension proof
  • Workers Compensation proof
  • Temporary Assistance for Needy Families proof
  • Pension or retirement income proof
  • Child support proof
  • Alimony or spousal support proof
  • Other income proof

Can renters apply, or is it only for homeowners?

This program is designed to help qualifying ALICE households start saving energy and reduce your monthly bill, whether you rent or own your home.

I don’t see the FPL Saving Steps program as an option on SAHelp?

Upon completion of the saving walkthrough, you will be eligible to proceed to the next step, which involves verifying your income with our community partner, the Salvation Army. You will need to make sure to register with the Salvation Army using the same email and zip code used during the saving walkthrough to see the FPL Saving Steps option.

How long does it take to get income verified from the Salvation Army?

Income verification times can vary, but most applications are processed within 30 days by the Salvation Army. Notification regarding the status of your application will be provided to you directly by the Salvation Army. FPL will only be informed once your income has been verified to meet ALICE criteria.

When will I see the credit on my bill?

Once your income is confirmed, FPL will review your account to make sure you meet eligibility requirements. Within 60 days, you will receive approval confirmation, and the credit will be applied to your account. Altogether, receiving your credit may take up to 90 days.

It says that they're no longer accepting applications—what does that mean?

If you receive this message, no additional applications are being accepted in your area.  We encourage you to make use of what you’ve learned to boost your home’s energy efficiency and help keep your bills low. Please check again later, as funding may become available for your region. If you need urgent help or have a disconnection notice, please visit  FPL.com/Help to explore all support resources.

I changed my address or closed my account after applying, how does this affect my credit?

Should an account be closed or transferred after submission of the application but before the credit is applied, you will be required to complete the walkthrough and submit a new income verification.
