A solar water heater can cut a family's water-heating costs by up to 85 percent, according to the Florida Solar Energy Center (FSEC).
As part of a five-year pilot program authorized by the Florida Public Service Commission, FPL is offering rebates of $1,000 for every new residential solar water heater. The rebate is available to all existing FPL residential customers with electric or gas water heating.
All of the 2013 rebate funds for this program have been reserved and the limited "standby list" is full. Customers on the standby list will be contacted in the numerical order of which applications are received should funds become available due to cancelled reservations. Applicants who do not receive a rebate for 2013 can apply for a 2014 rebate beginning in October 2013.
